| Flying Saucers were one of those teeth-rotting, hyperactivity-inducing, pastel-coloured sweets that all kids I grew up with in Dublin in the 1980's knew and loved, they have been around since the 1970's however, and are not just an Irish phenomenon, popular with kids in the US as well. They were, as the name suggests, shaped liked the flying saucers typically seen in bad American B-movies of the seventies, made of two disks of rice-paper or "eating-paper" as we knew it, about as big as an Irish £1 coin (1.5inches diameter), sandwiched within the bulbous hub in the middle of the disks was a delicious centre of sugary-sour fizz! So obviously bad for you, but sooo good when it burst in your mouth after the eating-paper melted away. A staple of any good child's candy diet in Dublin in the 1980's and now being sold in giant tubs of 100 for very little euros in Lidl stores nationwide. Hyperactivity, here I go again ... |
