The fuel filter, surprisingly enough, filters your fuel. Basically, it keeps all the crud in your fuel tank from being sucked into your engine. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your fuel filter every 10,000 miles, which is a pretty good idea, because if the filter becomes blocked, your car will run like ass until you replace it.
