Any hindrance to the passage of the intestinal contents. Some of the causes are hernia, adhesion, tumors, volvulus, congenital defects, local inflammation, gallstones, heavy metal poisoning, infection or spinal injury.

Symptons are typically abdominal pain, vomitting, distention, and a fecal odor to the breath. Under no circumstances should a laxative be given, as it may aggravate the situation.
