American novelist and short story writer. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1912, Cheever spent much of his working life in New York City. His short stories, for which he was most famous, draw on the experiences and shortcomings of the middle and upper-class of New York's suburbs. He used a comic, surreal tone with a moralistic message in many of his stories.
Cheever's novels include Falconer and The Wapshot Chronicle.
Cheever's 1978 collection The Stories of John Cheever was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
Cheever died of cancer in 1982. |
