| In NCAA athletics, a binding document signed by a prospective student/athlete
committing him or her to attend a specific college or university. This is used to
guarantee ahead of time that a scholarship athlete will show up at your school instead
of another school desiring his or her services. Each sport has a national signing day
or signing period when it is permissible to make these commitments, and blackout periods
when it is not allowed.
There are only two ways to get out of an LOI:
Otherwise, to get out of an LOI and attend a different school, you must
sit out a year of competition and lose one
year of athletic eligibility.
College sports fans tend to take verbal commitments way too seriously. The only
way to be sure an athlete is coming to a school is when he/she signs the LOI. |
