Make your own clothing

One of the many steps on the path to freedom.

Now, think about it. In our society, with which I mean the capitalism/consumerist "thing" in which we find ourselves today, we are largely if not totally dependent on the manufacturers. Quite simply put, we no longer have the knowledge to fend for ourselves. And this includes one of the basics: putting something over our naked ape bodies.

Firms like Tommy Hilfiger, Gap, Levi's, make a fortune off the fact that we can't do this ourselves.

My suggestion: learn how! I wouldn't suggest jumping directly to picking your own cotton and spinning your own thread. That'll take time. If it's not something you can do, that's ok. But, the more you can do, the freer you are.

I suggest with starting with the appearance of the clothing. Stop buying things with logos or slogans, i.e advertisements for these people which you pay to wear. Rather, get very simple, very inexpensive clothing and "purty it up" yourselves. Get some jet-printer transfer paper (iron-ons) and make whatever you want!

There are a lot of different ideas: your initials, quotes that you like, anti-advertisements (a good source is Adbusters), symbols like hearts, bombs, dollars with big X's through them. Whatever. You can make what you want and it'll cost 90% less. Or even better.

So, get going. All you have to lose is a little time; and to gain, a whole lotta freedom!

Reasons why I do this:

Where the fuck are you going to find iridescent sequined overall phat pants?
No one is ever wearing the same thing you are.
The average American woman is 5'4. I'm 5'9.
It makes me feel productive even when I'm avoiding homework to make big pants.
You get to feel like the shit when people say, "I love your (fill in the blank), where did you get it?" and you get to reply, "I made it." This always seems to impress people for some reason.
