An abnormal tuning of a stringed instrument in order to facilitate difficult passages, obtain unusual chords, enable the realization of unusual harmonics, or reach notes that are normally out of the instrument's range. The tuning is indicated by an accord at the beginning of the score. The notes in the score do not indicate the actual sound, but the position of the fingers in the usual manner.
