A commonly used term to refer to a monoalphabetic substitution cipher. This is where the encryption algorithm has a one-to-one mapping of characters/symbols of the plain alphabet to the characters/symbols of the cipher alphabet and the cipher alphabet does not change as the encryption progresses (that would be a polyalphabetic substitution cipher).
