A sign that a games console / arcade board is being asked by the programmer to do more work than it can cope with. Graphics chips featuring hardware sprites have a limit as to how many sprites they can draw per scanline. When this limit is exceeded, parts of the sprite begin to disappear momentarily. For an example, try the Mega Drive port of Strider Hiryu. A related problem is slowdown.
