In strict liability cases, a court holds a person liable or criminally responsible for something even though they didn't do it negligently or intentionally. There is no mens rea.

Examples of strict liability crimes are felony murder or statutory rape.

An example of strict liability in tort law is that an owner of a dangerous animal can be held liable for any damage it causes even if the owner did everything possible to restrain the animal -- that is, even if there was no negligence.
