A section of
bone and
cartilage located at the base of the
sternum.
Compression or
impact of or to the xiphoid process often results in a
breakage. The free-floating
sharp chunk of bone then
perforates internal
structures, causing
internal bleeding, resulting in
death unless
treated.
Fracture of the xiphoid process often occurs during
CPR, where
compression is applied to
resuscitate the
cardiovascular processes. To avoid this
occurence, gently
palpate the
torso of the victim to find the xiphoid process, and apply
compressions approximately 1 1/2 inch
above that spot.
