July 10-21, 1925, Dayton,
Tennessee
Famous trial of a Dayton, high school teacher named John Scopes. He was charged with breaking the law by teaching the theory of evolution.
Earlier that year in 1925 the Tennessee legislature declared unlawful any teaching that contradicted the Creationism taught in the Bible. The trial caught the attention of people all over the world. William Jennings Bryan served as the prosecutor and Clarence Darrow for the defense. Scopes was found guilty of teaching evolution and fined. The case was appealed and upheld by the Supreme Court but Scopes was acquitted on a technicality. The Tennessee law was later repealed.
