"Saw", a 2004 horror/thriller movie directed by James Wan, is quoted as being "the best psychological thriller since Se7en" (unknown source). Two men wake up in a room with a dead body lying between them. One of them, Dr. Lawrence Gordon, is given microtaped instructions to kill Adam, across the room. Zepp Hindle is given instructions to kill Lawrence's family should Lawrence fail this task, or die from a slow-acting poison. Lawrence and Adam realise that they're in the lair of the Jigsaw, a man who has nothing better to do than stalk people, figure out if they realise the value of life, drug the ones he thinks doesn't, lock them away, and videotape a message to them using a puppet instead of his face.
Classic story. Kill or be killed, you have a time limit and an ironic way to die, you have these tools with which to kill or die trying, you don't have enough time to figure out what's happening, the freaky puppet is God at the moment, you cannot escape without killing or being killed, and pay no attention to the man who has blown his brains out! He is not actually alive, he will not rise again and he is not the one who put you here!
A great film for an 18-day shoot, heart-pounding, nightmare-giving, and with a cool website and imminent sequel to back it up. (And the puppet is so weird...)
Starring Cary Elwes as Lawrence; Leigh Whannell as Adam; Shawnee Smith as the 'girl with the head brace', Amanda and Tobin Bell as the nefarious Jigsaw.
How much blood would you shed to stay alive?
