The Mixolydian mode is a mode whose root (I) is located on the 5th (V) note of a major scale. In blues and jazz theory, this scale is used to play over a Dominant Seventh (dom7, 7) chord. One can also think of it as a normal major scale with a flat 7th. An example follows:

G Mixolydian (C major, w/ root on G)
G A B C D E F G

Damn, that was so exciting that I almost tore a hole in my pants. Don't ask.

Mix`o*lyd"i*an mode` (?). [Gr. a mixing + E. Lydian.] Mus.

The seventh ecclesiastical mode, whose scale commences on G.
