The British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Established just after the Second World War, it is basically the British equivalent to the American Academy for Motion Picture Arts, the organisation which awards Oscars. Like its more famous US counterpart, the British Academy also has an annual award ceremony celebrating the best in British and international film and television. In a characteristically British show of unimaginativeness, the awards it gives away are called BAFTAs.

Baf"ta (?), n. [Cf. Per. baft. woven, wrought.]

A coarse stuff, usually of cotton, originally made in India. Also, an imitation of this fabric made for export.
