Suvrat's contribution to
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star prompted a
memory of the same rhyme in
Latin, which of course had to be added to the
node. In a sort of
stream of consciousness "Contrary Mary," also in a
Latin translation, floated to the surface. I record it here, lest this
piece of
classical verse be lost forever.
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockleshells,
And pretty maids all in a row.
O mea Maria, tota contraria
Quid tibi crescit in horto?
Testae et crotali sunt mihi flosculi,
Cum hyacinthino serto.
