Toi Gye is the seventh pattern learnt for the ITF style of Tae Kwon Do, and it is therefore, along with all previous patterns, (and many other elements), required for the eighth grading, promotion from red tags (3rd kup) to red belt (2nd kup).

The definition of the pattern is as follows: "Toi Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century AD), an authority on Neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on the 37th degree latitude, and the diagram represents 'scholar'."

This pattern is characterised by its often misunderstood W-shaped blocks, which are in fact a high section block against a staff attack, with a reaction. As with Do San and Dan Gun, there are a number of similarities between this pattern and the previous one, Joong Gun, including the start and end position, and the structure of the pattern. The movements for the pattern, and its diagram, may be found at http://www.itf-information.com/sub0407.htm.
