Do you
worry about the
fate of toads crossing
highways? During peak
toad season (when they seek out other toads for some
hot froggy love), many
horny toads cross highways trying to get to
ponds and
lakes. Unfortunately,
life is not like
Frogger -- many of the
amphibians are
crushed by
cars and
trucks before they can get across.
In an
effort to
help the toads, some towns in the
United States (and possibly in
Europe as well) have built "toad tunnels" under their highways. In
theory, the toads can travel through the
tunnels and completely avoid the marauding
semis and
Corvettes above. In
Davis, California, the
city spent $12,000 on a toad tunnel -- of course,
no one knows if it's being used or not...
