| Iron Man (review) | by StrawberryFrog |
I found Iron Man, the 2008 Marvel movie to be more deft than your average superhero comic adaptation - it hit the right notes without seeming cheesy, which seems a common pitfall of movies that put comic-book action and drama on the screen. This more natural acting is apparently a result of a lot of impovisation1, giving it a less stiff feel than, for instance, the X-men movies.
It's not deep, but it's quite thrilling. Robert Downey Jr. was a stroke of casting brilliance,...

| Gus's Chalet (review) | by Transitional Man | There are restaurants that become chic. They offer unique food and for a brief period of time are full of the young and hip, eating the latest in trendy dishes. They are the supernovae of cuisine, who burn brightly and fast.

| The Great Barbershop Race Wars (log) | by Ouzo | PART ONE
I grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, home of more gun racks per square person than anywhere south of the Santa Claus Residence. Like most people that aren’t hippies or Rapunzel, at times I would get haircuts. I’d
typically do this whenever my mind was wooing a girl (note that mind
and reality are different beasts, a lesson I still haven’t...

| How and why do we (humans) have culture? (essay) | by FrankThomas | Why,
among the myriad species of social animals on this planet do we humans,
uniquely (as far as we know), have culture? Half a million years ago early
hominids would have lived in social groups much as we observe higher
primates, chimpanzee in particular, now. Then something must have happened
to trigger the transition from social to cultural. What was that trigger and
what were the processes and mechanisms of the ...

| downvota (poetry) | by kalen | the sonnet what i wrote her as i hit the big downvoter was not a thing of beauty, pride, or glee
and it was a little manic linking off to things satanic as I typed into her "blab!" and clicked "CC"
'cause when she gets a-writing on things that sound like skiting i can hardly stop and parse my doggrel verse
a glance at other users shows me half a dozen luzers quite capable of more, and...
