• (June 5) Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier launch a hot-air balloon made of paper.
• (September 3) The Treaty of Paris officially ends the Revolutionary War, and cedes East Florida and West Florida to Spain.  The British representatives refuse to sit for Benjamin West's official portrait.
• (September 16) Jacques Montgolfier demonstrates a hot-air balloon to  Paris spectators.  When no-one volunteers to take a ride, the craft is launched from Versailles with a duck, a rooster, and a sheep as passengers.
• (November) The British remove their last miltary presence in the United States when they evacuate New York. Except they're still in Detroit and Chicago.
• The Laki volcano in Iceland begins its eight-month eruption.  This eruption will kill most of the livestock in Iceland, one-fourth the human population, and depress global temperatures by 4^o C for the next few years.
• (December) George Washington bids farewell to his troops, then formally resigns his command of the Army to Congress then meeting in Annapolis, Maryland.  He then returns home to Mount Vernon.
• William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, the Duke of Portland, becomes Prime Minister(under the Fox-North Coalition), but King George III dismisses this government (December 18)  because of the defeat of the 1783 India Bill. The King then asks William Pitt the Younger, aged 24, to form a government.
• The Treaty of Georgievsk establishes a Russian protectorate over Georgia.
