Back in the days when video cards were CGA and keyboards were XT, hard disks were larger than CD-ROM drives (if they had CD-ROMs back then) and held much less data.

Some recent computers also have 5.25 inch hard disks, to fit into their non-standard cases, squeezed right above the CD-ROM.
