Taiwan's de facto American embassy--since the U.S. as yet does not recognize the government in Taiwan, there is no real embassy there. Though it has no official diplomatic powers and is officially little more than any other private institute, it does provide services to Americans living in Taiwan, such as helping sort out difficulties with Taiwan's government and the U.S. government, renewing passports and the like.
