Autocephalous is a generic term referring to those religious bodies claiming similarity to or apostolic succession from the Roman Catholic Church but independent from it. The term in this sense is derived from older usage in the Orthodox Church where independent or autocephalous Apostolic See have been formed, usually along national lines.
