Written by French diplomat Henri Pozzi, Black Hand Over Europe was published in 1935 on the eve of the Second World War. This book presents both a stunning analysis and a first-hand account of the volatile political situation in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the rest of Europe at the time, yet not only has it been largely ignored in the West, but it was also banned for most of the 20th century in the post-WWII Yugoslav Federation (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Vojvodina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Macedonia) for reasons which quickly become obvious. Of course, with the inevitable destruction of Yugoslavia witnessed by the world in the early-mid 1990s, interest in this book has renewed.

Black Hand Over Europe is written in documentary style, complete with lively interviews of the various political players and first-hand impressions of the locales Pozzi visited throughout South Eastern Europe. Diplomatic language is completely dispensed with, which adds to the sense of urgency about his message, but also may raise the suspicions of some readers. Pozzi does not pretend that his book is an unemotional academic analysis and therefore neither should you. But that definitely does not mean that his work should be dismissed as it has been in the past.

Information about the author and the book in general--as presented by the book's original publisher--can be found in the second part of the appendices under "Publisher's Note". Black Hand Over Europe is in the public domain.
