Djarum Special is a kind of filtered clove cigarette, or kretek, made by the Djarum Tobacco Company of Indonesia. They come as regulars, lights, and menthol cigarettes. All Djarum Specials are wrapped in dark brown paper with a gold band and like almost all cloves the paper is coated with brown sugar so it tastes sweet when you wrap your lips around the end. Some smokers claim there is also a hint of mint at the end.

Djarum Specials are sold in seven different styles and types, Djarum Special 12's, Djarum Special 20's, Djarum Special 20's (International Pack), Djarum Special Lights 20's, Djarum Special Lights 20's (International Pack), Djarum Special Menthol 20's, and Djarum Special Menthol 20's (International Pack). The 12s and standard 20's are fatter and come in the standard American-style cigarette box with twenty cigarettes in rows of five by four in the 20's. The International Packs feature thinner and longer cigarettes in a flattened box with twenty cigarettes in two rows of ten. Many smokers prefer the International Pack Djarum Special for both the appearance and the flavor difference that the additional air in the thinner cigarette produces.

Since it is sweeter than its Goth cousin, the Djarum Black, it is preferred by smokers new to cloves and new smokers in general as more of a "candy cigarette" similar to a flavored cigarette.
