越後

Echigo (modern-day Niigata Prefecture), one of the 68 ancient provinces of Japan, was located on the Sea of Japan and bordered Etchu, Kozuke and Shinano provinces. The great warlord Uesugi Kenshin ruled Echigo during the Sengoku Era, and sallied forth from thence to do battle with his rival Takeda Shingen.
