Expression for the near-religious worship of Adolf Hitler that was widespread in Nazi Germany. It was mainly a result of the ubiquitous propaganda which the state-controlled press spread all over the country.

It's hard to imagine nowadays, but many, many people bought into it and saw Hitler as a messiah-like ubermensch. Schoolgirls wrote him letters and offered to bear his children. Grown men wept in joy for the honor of having him shake their hand.

Obviously, such a tremendous emotional investment isn't easy to write off, so it's no big surprise that many people refused to believe that the person they had worshipped was one of the biggest criminals in history and instead claimed that the reports about Auschwitz were faked.
