Friend pheremones are one possible explanation for the just friends syndrome. The theory states that victims of this syndrome unconsciously emit some kind of "friend pheremone" which negates any romantic attraction that a member of the opposite sex might feel towards the victim.

Existence of the friend pheremone is suspected, but has not been confirmed.
