tourist or non-local, particularly in the south west of England (
Dorset,
Devon,
Cornwall) where the word is thought to have originated from local dialects.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term was first made popular by the film The System (1962), which was set in the Devon resort of Torquay, centre of the English Riviera.
