The Hexagon is a commonly used term for metropolitan
France (i.e. the part in continental
Europe) although it's usually written in French, as
L'Hexagone. You can see the approximate shape of a hexagon if you look at a map of France; there are six sharp angles along its
border.
The six sides of the French Hexagon are:
- Spain
- The Mediterranean Sea
- Italy and Switzerland
- Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg
- The English Channel (La Manche in French)
- The Atlantic Ocean
L'Hexagone is roughly equivalent to "America" as a replacement for the
United States. For example, recently there was a
party near
Grenoble called "Hexagona", and it featured DJs from all over France.
