HOPH'NI
A son of Eli; with his brother Phinehas he served as priest when Eli was old, but both made themselves unworthy of the sacred office by their scandalous conduct. For this a divine judgement was pronounced against Eli and his house. Later, when it was resolved that the ark of God be taken to the battlefield, Hophni and Phinehas went with it, both being slain in the disastrous battle which followed (1 Sam. 2:22-4:22).
