On 18 July 2001, to comply with one of the requirements of the ORBIT Act, INTELSAT changed from an intergovernmental organization to a privately-held corporation, with its signatories as the initial shareholders. The company has rebranded itself as "Intelsat" (mixed case), since the name is no longer an abbreviation.
