Kevalaih Saptakam Gunyat: For 7 the Multiplicand is 143

Kevalaih Saptakam Gunyat is the corollary to Paraavartya Yojayet, the fourth sutra of Vedic mathematics.

This sutra converts fractions in which the denominator is 7 to a decimal. It is used in conjunction with Ekanyunena Purvena. This will not arrive at every possible decimal point in every case.

Example: convert 1/7 to a decimal
We multiply the multiplicand (143) by 999 using Ekanyunena Purvena. We use 999 because it has the same number of digits as our multiplicand and consists only of nines
143 x 999 = 142857
Multiply that number by the numerator: 1 x 142857 = 142857
Place a decimal point at the beginning: 0.142857
Thus, 1/7 = 0.142857

Example: convert 2/7 to a decimal
We multiply the multiplicand (143) by 999 using Ekanyunena Purvena.
143 x 999 = 142857
Multiply that number by the numerator: 2 x 142857 = 285714
Place a decimal point at the beginning: 0.285714
Thus, 2/7 = 0.285714
