The Croatian national anthem, Lijepa naša domovino, is based on a poem written by Antun Mihanović (1796-1861) that was first published in Ljudevit Gaj's Novine horvatzke (roughly "Newspaper of Croatia") in 1835. The score was later composed by Josip Runjanin (1821-1878) in the 1840s and the hymn became an integral part of the Croatian national renaissance sparked in the 19th century by increasing cultural pressure from Hungary in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Two additional points of interest:

• Ukranian linguist Agatangel Efimovic Krimski (1871-1942), founder of the Ukranian Academy of Sciences and its lifelong president, suggested during the 1934 Congress of Soviet Writers that the Soviet national anthem be composed similarly to the Croatian one, as his close friend Maksim Gorki believed it to be "the most beautiful among anthems". (As much as I like the Croatian anthem, I'm glad they chose the anthem they did!)


• During the former Socialist Yugoslav regime (1945-1990), those who sang the Croatian anthem risked imprisonment!

Although I've seen a few slightly different versions of the anthem here and there, the version below is the one found on Kuna banknotes and in the official law on national symbols:

Lijepa naša domovino

Lijepa naša domovino,
Oj junačka zemljo mila,
Stare slave djedovino, 
da bi važda sretna bila!

Mila, kano si nam slavna,
Mila si nam ti jedina,
Mila, kuda si nam ravna,
Mila, kuda si planina!

Teci Dravo, Savo teci,
Nit' ti Dunav silu gubi,
Sinje more svijetu reci:
Da svoj narod Hrvat ljubi,

There is an official English translation of the hymn, but I personally think it isn't as good as it could be and it doesn't do the Croatian version justice--though of course some parts are indeed difficult to translate. So, without further ado, here's my humble attempt at an acceptable, if more literal, translation:

Our Beautiful Homeland

Our beautiful homeland,
O dear, heroic country,
Fatherland of ancient glories,
May you always be happy!

Beloved, how glorious you are to us,
Beloved, you are our one and only,
Beloved where you are level,
Beloved where you are mountainous!

Flow Drava, Sava flow,
Nor you, Danube, lose your vigour,
Deep blue sea go tell the world:
That a Croat loves his nation,

As long as his fields are warmed by sunshine,
As long as his oaks are whipped by wild winds,
As long as his dead are hidden by graves,
As long as his living heart beats!
