8.6 was the first release, since 8.0, where the kernel was completely rewritten, this time rebuilt more upon the basic Mach kernel code. Among the benefits is smaller size and memory use (200kb in 8.6 verses 2 meg in 8.1) and 20% lower power consuption for PowerBooks.

Sadly, this rewrite broke a disproportional amount of software.
