A fairly large colonial town. It was quite successful under the leadership of John Winthrop who asserted that the colony would be "a city on the hill". (Boston that is)

The residents believed they had a covenant with God to produce a holy society that would be a model for all mankind.

And people wonder why the colonial northeast was considered uppity?
