Unlike many other noise artists, the work of Merzbow is highly varied and consistently fascinating. Masami Akita is a sculptor of sound, using power electronics, samples, tape loops and whatever else he can find to create pieces that are, yes, brutal, but also deep and strangely beautiful. Highly recommended are his CDs "1930" and (if you can find it) "Batztoutai with Memorial Gadgets."
