American poet, author, and physician. His most famous poems include Old Ironsides, The Chambered Nautilus, and the ironic Deacon's Masterpiece. He wrote a number of important medical papers and is the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., U.S supreme court justice. Holmes senior was born in 1809 and died in 1894.
