In geology, this term refers to the formation of dolomite from limestone.

This process is the dolomitization of limestone by metasomatic alteration: in other words, the calcium in the limestone is replaced by magnesium. This occurs very soon after deposition, when the limestone is still unconsolidated.

In this context penecontemporaneous simply means 'very soon after'.
