Added by Oscar Wilde to his best-known book after it was published in its second edition, this short collection of aphorisms sums up the ethicism's position on art. Full of paradoxical statements, the preface has the same effect on the reader as the "what is the sound of one hand clapping" statement of Zen buddhism; it opens the reader's mind to receive enlightenment.
