A novel by
J.G. Ballard (
* * 1/2) about several people who sneak onto a
Pacific Island, to save the
Albatross from the
French who are going to perform
Nuclear tests there, and what they do to the island and themselves.
This novel centers on the relationship between the two main characters, the charismatic
Dr. Barbara whose idea this all is and the teenaged
Neil who makes it all possible.
The novel exploits the depredations of the
most extreme elements of the
feminist,
environmentalist, and
animal rights movements. I was too disturbed by the end of the book to decide whether or not Ballard is making a judgement on those movements as a whole.
Not for the faint of heart. You may regret starting the book by the time you finish it.
