The scattering of low energy charged particles by matter. For example a stream of electrons fired at a film of gold a few atoms thick. Most of the electrons will pass deflected slightly through the metal but a few will directly collide with a gold nucleus and bounce back. The gold atom, which has much more mass than an electron, will be unaffected.
