A database of protein sequences maintained by the University of Geneva. Entries consist of the protein sequence, references to the journal articles where the sequence was first reported, the name of the gene encoding the protein, along with some (minimal) general information about the protein.

SWISS-PROT is regarded as the best primary database of protein sequences in terms of quality of annotations and accuracy, and is fast becoming the de facto standard. As it is only a subset of the sprawling PIR database, it is neither as up to date or complete as some other databases.
