Super Bowl XXII|Super Bowl XXIV
January 22, 1989
The 49ers captured their third Super Bowl crown of the 80s with an exciting victory over the Bengals, who were making their second appearance as AFC champions in the title game played at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.
The real excitement began in the second half, as San Francisco, despite having a better day than Cincinnati offensively, trailed 16-13 late in the fourth quarter. However, the 49ers marched 92 yards downfield in the waning moments of the game to score the winning touchdown on a ten yard pass from Joe Montana to seal their victory.
Wide receiver Jerry Rice was named MVP for the game, while Joe Montana set a new Super Bowl record for total yards passed with 357.
San Francisco coach Bill Walsh led the 49ers, while Sam Wyche headed up the Bengals. Attendance for the game was 75,129.
