These ideas about meaning are the fruits of discussing The Stranger. The protagonist in the novel, believes only in immediate meaning -- he's stupid. Hope someone finds this interesting.

  • Immediate meaning - is meaning that can be found in the present and does not last. (i.e. sex, a beautiful sunrise or anywhere intrinsic meaning can be found .)

  • Intermediate meaning - is not found in the present, but rather is worked towards. (i.e. education)

  • Ultimate meaning - is found in God or some other thing greater than oneself.
