Let's expand this idea a little.
'
AOL sucks rocks.' is a transitive usage, and '
sucks' is the transitive verb.
Some verbs are always transitive, such as 'abhor'. It is very hard to abhor in a vacuum. Many verbs are
usually transitive, but can be found without a direct object, or without one explicitly stated.
Some verbs have separate transitive and intransitive senses: 'The heretic burned the missal.' is a very different statement to 'The heretic burned at the stake.'
Oppose
intransitive verb.
