Term introduced by Marshall McLuhan. In contrast with hot media

Cool media require some kind of participation from the receiver. "Fill in the blanks" is a good description. They also tend to engage multiple senses. Equated with oral societies. Television was McLuhan's favorite example.

This is a very subtle distinction, since movies are hot while television is cool. TV may also become "hotter" as definition and quality continues to increase.
