An escape tone (in counterpoint, tonal harmony, and composition) is a non-chord tone approached by step and resolved by a leap in the opposite direction. They are in essence the opposite of appoggiatura.

Escape tones are usually diatonic, unaccented, and occuring on weak beats leading to strong beats.
