In Europe : an artist who makes movies - that is, who turns a scenario (sometimes written by himself) into moving pictures and sounds.

In the USA : a guy hired by an executive producer to hold a camera while actors try to play in front of it and jump through big explosions and special effects at the same time. Not easy.
