A plane designed to operate from water, which uses pontoons to keep it from sinking. Not to be confused with flying boats, which use the fuselage as a flotation device.

The first float plane was the Hydravion monoplane designed by Henri Fabre. The Hydravion first flew on March 28, 1910 at La Mede in France.
